One week in

So now we've gone through one week of 2011, and what has happened?

VAT is up to 20%, causing an awful lot of talk on the news even though I've noticed no real difference apart from a tiny price rise. I'm sure that in 6 months, everyone will have forgotten.

England have beaten Australia in cricket. I suppose if you're into cricket, it's a big thing and yes, it will do good to have a bit of pride in our sportsmen but nothing major. I just really hope they're not going to get cocky and sully their reputation and maybe the reputation of England cricket.

The Mac App Store opened, on the 6th. This is a big change for all OSX users, giving us the same ease and experience available on the iPhone and iPad. It's also brilliant for us developers who now have one centralised method for distributing and updating applications.

Swine flu is back in the news. I know several people have died, but then many do with regular seasonal flu. I think a lot of this is scare mongering, the Daily Fail do love a good panic.

There has also been a lot of media coverage about a US teacher who has taken it upon himself to censor the word "nigger" from Huckleberry Finn. This I find ridiculous and quite blasphemous. You may not like what was written, but what was written was written. We shouldn't try to change this. Many people have said how racist this word and context is, but I disagree. Put this into the time that the book was written and published, and you'll find this book to be at the other end of the spectrum. This book was ahead of it's time, and also provides a wonderful story and wonderful history and no one should ever try to change this.

And finally we've had the first legal punishment for the MP expenses scandal in 2010. A labour MP has been sentenced to 18 months for fraud, and may many more crooked politicians join him.

Happy 2011.
